ENGRAVING AND MARKING

Suitable glass can be laser engraved with tested settings, effective extraction, proper machine safeguards, and active supervision. Because glass may crack or release sharp surface particles, inspect each item before processing and handle the engraved area carefully afterward.

Uniform, annealed soda-lime or float glass is usually the most reliable starting point for CO₂ laser engraving. Crystal, hand-blown, tempered, borosilicate, coated, and specialty glass may respond differently because of their composition, wall thickness, coatings, and internal stress.

Glass laser engraving settings depend on the machine model, laser power, glass composition, surface shape, focus, DPI, line interval, air assist, and desired frosted finish. The following Thunder Laser Nova settings are starting references and should be tested on the actual glass before production.

These values are starting points only. Run a small test and adjust the speed, power, focus, DPI, line interval, air assist, and image processing according to the actual glass and required surface result.

A CO₂ laser normally creates a visible frosted texture through controlled thermal interaction with the glass surface. A UV laser can create finer text, logos, codes, and graphics on selected glass with a smaller heat-affected area and little noticeable depth.

A conventional CO₂ laser engraving machine is normally used to create frosted surface engravings rather than cut ordinary glass sheets. Glass cutting generally requires a different industrial process, such as waterjet cutting, CNC glass tooling, or a specialized ultrafast laser system.

Tempered glass contains high internal stress and may shatter when locally heated or damaged. Routine post-tempering engraving is not recommended unless the glass supplier approves the process and sample testing confirms that the specific product can be marked safely.

Borosilicate glass may produce weak or inconsistent results with conventional CO₂ surface engraving because its thermal properties differ from ordinary soda-lime glass. Test the actual item before accepting a production order or engraving a valuable laboratory component.

Some crystal and hand-blown glass can be engraved, but variations in composition, wall thickness, lead content, and internal stress may increase the risk of cracking or uneven results. Use controlled heat input and test a spare piece before processing the final product.

Rough engraving and small surface chips can result from excessive localized heat, unsuitable focus, overly dense engraving, repeated passes, or a glass composition that responds inconsistently. Reduce heat accumulation and test the power, speed, focus, DPI, and line spacing.

Use tested lower-energy settings, correct focus, controlled DPI, and suitable line spacing, and avoid engraving the same area repeatedly. A compatible damp paper layer, thin soap film, or masking method may help distribute heat, but it should always be tested with the specific glass and machine setup.

Yes. Glass photo engraving uses a grayscale or dithered bitmap to create a frosted tonal image. Strong subject contrast, limited background detail, suitable sharpening, and controlled DPI help reproduce clearer portraits while reducing excessive heat in large dark areas.

A rotary attachment is recommended for laser engraving glass bottles, wine glasses, beer mugs, tumblers, jars, and other cylindrical glassware. It rotates the object during engraving, helping maintain more consistent positioning across the curved surface.

Small logos on a limited area may sometimes be engraved without a rotary, but the result depends on the glass diameter, curvature, design size, and available focus range. Learn more in our laser rotary attachment guide.

Rotary glass engraving can be used for wine glasses, champagne flutes, beer mugs, glass bottles, jars, candle holders, cylindrical vases, drinking glasses, and selected glass tumblers. The object must fit securely inside the machine and remain stable without excessive pressure on the glass.

A roller rotary is often convenient for straight cylindrical glassware because the object rests on supporting rollers and can be loaded quickly. A chuck rotary holds the object more directly and may offer better positioning for certain bottles or irregular shapes, but the clamping pressure must be controlled carefully to avoid damaging fragile glass.

Tapered wine glasses and bottles can be rotary engraved, but changing diameter across the design area can cause distortion. Keep the artwork within the straightest section when possible, use suitable supports, and test the design position and rotation before engraving the final item.

Incorrect rotary engraving size is commonly caused by the wrong object diameter, circle pulse or steps-per-rotation value, incorrect rotary type, object slipping, an unlevel fixture, or a tapered workpiece. Recheck the rotary settings, measure the glass at the engraving position, and run a low-power test before production.

Open Rotary Setup in LightBurn, enable the rotary, select the correct roller or chuck type, enter the device-specific steps per rotation, and input the measured glass diameter. Confirm the artwork direction, use Frame to check the engraving area, and perform a low-power test before engraving the glass.

A rotary attachment can support wraparound or 360-degree glass engraving when the object has a suitable cylindrical shape and the design fits within the usable circumference. Handles, necks, strong tapers, raised seams, limited machine clearance, and changing diameters may restrict the available engraving area.

Compatible mirror glass can often be processed from the coated or reflective backing side, creating a design while keeping the front glass surface smooth. The correct laser source and settings depend on the mirror coating, paint layer, backing construction, and desired visual effect.
